Located in the beautiful volcanic region of La Fortuna, Proyecto Asis cares for sloths, monkeys, toucans, and even raccoons! This is another sanctuary that unfortunately cannot open back up again to the public until 2021. They were going to try and open up end of August, but unfortunately with the virus, it just was not feasible. As with the other sanctuaries, just because Proyecto Asis cannot welcome visitors at the moment (limiting their funds greatly), doesn't mean they aren't receiving animals daily. The sanctuary staff has cut back and limited their salary as well, to only a certain percentage.
Over the last few weeks, there has been an increase in electrocution wildlife victims in the La Fortuna region, especially with sloths. Unfortunately, a few have passed away, and one had to get her arm amputated, resulting in depression. As you can see, the sanctuary has their hands full, and desperately needs funds to help stay afloat until 2021.
More about the sanctuary and ways to help:
-They have a location that takes in all animals, including orphaned and injured sloths, mammals, and birds. Here, the veterinarians help to rehabilitate these beautiful creatures, as well as provide the most comfortable life (medicine, nutrition, exercise, enrichment) for them, and when possible, release them back into the wild! The sanctuary also just opened up a second location, in the La Fortuna region, that is a devoted sloth sanctuary.
-During the current pandemic, in order to still give us a chance to tour the sanctuary, as well as help to raise money, to keep the sanctuary open, with every donation toward the sanctuary, you are offered a free virtual tour! We went on one a few weeks back, and let me tell you, it was beyond incredible! It was a one on one tour with the amazing owner. We got to see monkeys (where we learned about the saying "High Four", as monkeys only have four fingers, so they say high four, instead of giving a high five haha), learn about the various bird species and the illegal pet trade of them, as well as see a rescued newborn sloth (less than a month old) whose mom had passed away.
This sanctuary is selfless and it shows in the care that they provide to their rescued animals, as well as in the reduction of their own personal salary, in order to care more for those beautiful creatures that call their sanctuary home.
