For the last 28 years (i.e. since I was born), I have been going up to northern Wisconsin every summer, to a cabin on the lake. We go for a week. Even when my family and I moved down to Florida, when I was 14, every summer we would still fly up to Wisconsin (into Milwaukee, though there is an airport in up north, Wisconsin, in a town called Rhinelander) and then drive to our cabin. Even further, my parents have been going up north with THEIR family (my grandparents), since they were kids! While they did not go to the same cabin, as my parents didn't meet until college, both their families vacation in the same area up north. If you live in Wisconsin, or the midwest, more than likely you have been "up north".
Up north is more than a place, it is a feeling and an area where the air feels cleaner, you can breathe easier, and the cares of the world tend to slip away from you. It is a place to go to unwind and relax, though there is still Wifi if you choose. Let's all be honest, it is nice to have the option for wifi ;).
I am going to go into the "up north" areas of Wisconsin. While you can technically go "up north" anywhere in Wisconsin, Michigan, and even Minnesota (helllooo...can you say going over the border into beautiful Canada? Being surrounded by tall pines and beautiful wildlife?), this post is going to provide an itinerary and insight into "up north" Wisconsin.
"Up north" Wisconsin consists of basically anything north of Greenbay (i.e. the thumb of Wisconsin). How I view Up North is that of the following cities/counties: Saint Germain, Eagle River, Tomahawk, Rhinelander, Minocqua, Three Rivers, and Boulder Junction. While each town holds its own charm, and if you stay in one town and decide to explore the various supper clubs, state parks, and state forests, you will more than likely find yourself wondering through and into some, if not each, of these towns.
Even though "up north" encompasses the beauty of each of these towns, my family personally stays in Saint Germain, Wisconsin, on Big Saint Germain Lake. There is also a Little Saint Germain Lake as well, or you can stay on Lake Content (located in Saint Germain, Wisconsin). There are so many activities to do up in the Northwoods, including boating, swimming, hiking, jet skiing, water skiing, campfires, supper clubs, antiquing (don't know it til you try it), breweries, and stargazing (one of my favorite activities, as there are barely any lights, as the area is mostly wooded and underdeveloped, making it so that you can see the entire sky. I feel as if I am in my own world and bubble and one night I even saw thirteen...THIRTEEN shooting stars).
Below is an itinerary of places to go, eat, stay, etc., broken down.
Places to Stay:
I highly suggest renting a cabin or a house for the week, as this will allow for you to better be on the water and cook lunches, have your own campfire, and even rent a boat. However, I will list cheaper options, as well as a hotel that is right on the water, in case you would rather stay at a hotel.
Deer Run Resort
The Waters (hotel that also has a waterpark, as well as even a Starbucks, which is basically unheard of in the Northwoods.)
Eagle River Resort (hotel that is right on the water!)
Rustic Manor (motel)
Whitetail Inn (hotel)
Hearthside Inn (motel)
Supper Clubs and Restaurants:
Whitetail Inn
Sister's Saloon
Paul Bunyon's
Northstar
Clearview
Blink Bonnies
Pub N Prime
Spang's Italian Restaraunt
Four Seasons Supper Club
19th Hole Sports Bar and Grill
Marty's Place North
The Hillside Tavern & Grill
Northfork Fin & Filet
Wolfpack (breakfast spot)
Three C's (breakfast spot)
Fibbers Bar and Restaraunt
Minocqua Brewing Company (restaurant and brewery)
Things to Do:
Hiking at Fallison Lake Trail, Crystal Lake, Bearskin State Trail, Fern Ridge Trail, Three Eagle Trail, Coontail, The Hiker Box
Northwoods Zip Line Tours
Rafting or canoeing at Wildwood Outdoor Adventures (Eagle River, WI)
Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo and Safari (Minocqua)
Flea Market (every Monday) in Saint Germain, WI
Loon Days (every Wednesday) in Mercer, WI
Boat and jet ski rental (Paul's Rent All, St. Germain Sport Marine, Cropsey Rentals)
Go into town and shop, sample some local coffee, antique, and eat at a local establishment (I recommend going into town in Eagle River, Minocqua, or Boulder Junction). To get you to the town center for Eagle River, type in The Daily Grind coffee shop. To get you to the town center for Minocqua, type in Sallet's Northwoods. For Boulder Junction, since the town is very small, you can just type in Boulder Junction into your GPS and it will take you to the city center. However, with all of these places, you have to remember that you are in the Northwoods, and cell service can be spotty, so I suggest downloading an offline version of the map before you start driving.
